It has become increasingly apparent that there are important interactions between 'mind and body' that can influence health and vulnerability to disease at every point in the life span. Early in life, the rearing environment and the quality of parental care affect the maturation of our physiological systems and our mental and physical wellbeing. The research projects in my laboratory investigate a number of different questions at this stage, specifically on the topic of 'fetal programming': on the myriad ways that pregnancy conditions and events during the fetal and infancy periods help to establish the regulatory set points of the body. During middle-age and later in old age, mind-body interactions and life style continue to be important, but more with respect to helping to maintain health and facilitating recovery following illness. We are conducting a number of projects on the biology of aging, especially with respect to how the immune system changes in the older individual. The process of immune senescence or the 'going to sleep of immunity' in the aged animal and person is frequently associated with an increase in proinflammatory processes and a decline in protective immune responses against bacterial and viral infections. Our research is investigating how psychosocial processes --both negative and positive-- influence immune competence at this stage, serving to undermine health or to promote resilience and vigor. Mental outlook, emotional wellbeing, and life style, including diet and exercise, are very important for sustaining health and decreasing morbidity and mortality in the elderly.
